Andrew Gilravey, College Director
With nearly 30 years professional experience in the UK Fire Service, Andrew brings a wealth of invaluable knowledge to his role as the College Director of ISTC, where he is ultimately responsible for the development of business growth and to actively support business opportunities both inside and outside Malta. His primary focus is to develop and sustain new business for the Company and to ensure growth and progress in a cost effective and timely manner, whilst maintaining existing client relationships.
Andrew’s illustrious career in the Fire Service saw him dedicate 15 years as an operational fire-fighter and watch manager in Merseyside, England, before becoming a station manager and specialist senior instructor at the Fire Service College in Moreton-in-Marsh, where he was recognised as being one of the UK’s most qualified Instructors, specialising in BA Rescue & Search techniques, Fire Behaviour, Tactical Ventilation, Road Traffic Collision extrication and Hazmat/Radiation incidents.
From 2005 till 2011, Andrew became a group manager at the College, tasked with designing, delivering and managing training courses for all levels of international fire-fighting personnel working in the petrochemical industry and local authority/civil defense, which required a substantial commitment to overseas work, with particular emphasis in the Middle East regions.
Mike Dyer, Operations Manager
After serving for 26 years in the British Fire Service, where he worked his way through all ranks, up to Group Manager, Mike brings with him a wealth of experience in terms of management and operational efficiency and international standards.
As Operations Manager, responsible for the planning, maintenance and development of all training courses and their accreditation, his unrivalled expertise stems from the various roles Mike held throughout his career. He has trained in incident command, operationally at tactical officer level and also as a deputy team leader, the All Wales Urban Search and Rescue Team and attended several high profile incidents including the aftermath of the Earthquake in New Zealand as part of the UK International Search & Rescue Team. Additionally he has delivered training worldwide including Spain, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Russia, and held the post of Head of Department at the Fire Service College for over 5 years, with a focus on developing and delivering training courses to international students.
Brian Cranmer, Assistant Operations Manager
A former member of Britain’s elite Royal Marine Commandos, Brian joined ISTC in 2004 and became a senior instructor in 2008. Brian’s military experience means he takes extra care to ensure the safety of everyone who attends ISTC’s courses. His other main duties include the overseeing all of the marine training requirements and water based equipment and facilities, such as the training pool and lifeboat, to ensure they are in full working condition in line with operational requirements.
Valhmor Micallef, Health & Safety Manager
Valhmor was recruited to ISTC after working for nine years as a Senior Executive in enforcement for the Malta Tourism Authority. As a public officer with the Maltese government, a major part of his duties included the evaluation, regulation and improvement of Quality, Safety, and Fire Safety standards within the tourism (hotel & catering) industry.
During his tenure at the Authority he was also assigned the assessment, monitoring and regulation of the recreational diving industry. An overall improvement of 75% in operational and safety standards in this industry was recorded within the first two years.
Valhmor joined ISTC with one very specific goal: to strengthen the advisory and consultancy arm of ISTC. The method to be adopted was clear: to treat all clients with honesty, fairness and integrity.
As Health and Safety Manager for ISTC, Valhmor offers invaluable consultancy and training services to clients – both in Malta, and on the International stage.
Valhmor is registered as a Competent Person with the Occupational Health and Safety Authority (OHSA) of Malta.
Guy Davey, Senior Instructor
Guy joined ISTC in 2008 and as an approved OPITO safety diver and Instructor for the STCW95 Marine & Offshore courses, he is competent to instruct on a whole range of fire-fighting techniques and offshore survival skills.
Guy is a UK Fire Service approved BA Instructor and since gaining this much sought after qualification, he continues to develop and enhance the skills & fire-fighting techniques of students attending training courses at ISTC.
Guy likes to take a hands-on approach during training sessions and to lead by example, while also encouraging the students to fully participate and make the most of their training experience at ISTC.
Gregg McMillan, Senior Instructor
Gregg joined ISTC in 2013 following a 32-year career in the UK Fire Service; having gained extensive operational and managerial experience, ranging from incident command of emergencies and marine firefighting, to the development, supervision and review of a suite of international fire training courses.
Gregg is also a qualified OPITO HUET Safety Diver, and a PADI & BSAC Open Water Instructor, which further enhances our water safety capability.
Walter Willie, Senior Instructor
As the ex- fire chief of Malta international airport, Walter provides a wealth of experience and knowledge from the world of aviation and is an invaluable asset to the ISTC team. His role also includes the responsibility of directing the aviation rescue & fire fighting courses and maintaining the relevant standards.
Walter’s extensive portfolio of delivering International training ensures that ISTC retains the ability to deliver a range of courses in line with industry best practice.
Kevin Grech, Senior Instructor
Kevin joined the Instructional team at ISTC in 2012 after serving 11 years offshore, on oil rigs as a crane operator and maintenance technician.
Part of Kevin’s training at ISTC has been to qualify as an adventure/open water safety diver, which complements our existing team of expert safety divers and instructors. This also affords ISTC the luxury of having qualified and experienced personnel to hand, for all offshore training delivery.
Patrick Abela, Sales Manager
Patrick joined ISTC as our Sales Consultant in November 2012. Backed by years of expertise gained in the hospitality and tourism industry, Patrick has a wealth of experience ranging from managing the front-of-house of 5-star establishments to managing customer relationships and business development.
A highly energetic, self-driven person, Patrick’s decision to change his career-path from hospitality to sales led him to pursue a Diploma in Sales and Marketing Management with Cambridge College, an opportunity which allowed him to better focus on his area of specialisation. He excels at steadily establishing strong relationships with businesses and individual customers and supporting them in identifying areas where ISTC can help them become better, safer and more secure. Patrick’s ultimate goal is to apply his drive and passion to find opportunities that will result in cost-effective, beneficial solutions for our local and international customers
Susan Abela, Administration & Logistics
Susan joined the Company in 2015 bringing along many years of experience from administrative and secretarial work. Susan has a natural flair for coordinating and dealing with people’s enquiries and retains the ability to remain friendly and enthusiastic, whatever the circumstances. Her many responsibilities include the handling of administrative & logistical tasks, whilst also performing an integral role in assisting the Sales, H&S and the Operational management team, in ensuring that everything behind the scenes is running as smoothly as possible.
