DESIGNED FOR Members and potential members of fire and emergency response teams in industry. AIMS To provide delegates with theoretical and practical instruction in the skills and knowledge required to operate effectively as a fire team leader, to control fire and emergency situations in the workplace and to carry out rescues as necessary.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

On Successful completion of the course, delegates will be able to:

  • Select and operate appropriate basic fire fighting equipment to the required level of competence
  • Extinguish different classes of fire using correct techniques and appropriate media.
  • Use full duration breathing apparatus equipment confidently, and able to carry out search and rescue procedures.
  • Apply communication and control procedures and be aware of limitations involved.

CONTENT

Fire Extinguishers and foam theory – the essential basics of combustion, classes of fire, etc. Discussion of appropriate classes of extinguisher, input on foam fire fighting equipment.

Working in smoke and darkness, search and rescue techniques – an introduction to the principles of survival and rescue in a fire situation, together with input on safe procedures for search and rescue.

BA Procedures – how to carry out the safety procedures and practices necessary to maximise safety, when breathing apparatus is brought in to operation.

Set familiarization and maintenance – an introduction to the working and routine testing and maintenance of a full duration breathing apparatus set, and an escape set.

Varied conditions exercise  an opportunity t experience in safety, the different conditions and problems likely to be encountered, whilst wearing breathing apparatus.

Fire Fighter Safety – Advice and discussion on the problems associated with ‘Tunnel Vision’ at emergency incidence. Video presentation of such incidents. A summary of the necessary works of command etc.to be used on the fire ground.

Hose and Foam Drills – An opportunity to practice the skills of hose handling, branch holding, pump operation, together with the use of foam fire fighting equipment on liquid fires.

Casualty handling – A demonstration of the various stretchers and rescue equipment likely to be used, with advice on the handling of unconscious casualties by recue team.

Fire Extinguisher Practical Session – Hands on use of various fire extinguishers on all types of fires.

LPG gas Demonstration – The properties and hazards of LPGs (Propane and Butane) and graphically demonstrated, together with mini BLEVEs. Use of techniques to control leaks, fight liquid/gas fires etc.

Heat and Humidity Theory – Input on the dangers of working in hot and humid atmosphere and advice on how to recognise the physical warning signs, in themselves and in others.

Teamwork and communications – A theory session to highlight the elements of teamwork, as applied to emergency response situations. A reminder of the need for effective communications during an incident, an explanation of how to achieve this.

Valve isolation and fire fighting – An opportunity to put into practice the team work and fire fighting techniques described, to tackle pressurized gas and liquid leaks, involved in fire.

BA Exercise – Full duration BA sets are used to familiarise students with working in conditions of heat, smoke and darkness, developing skills in search and rescue techniques and fire fighting. Exercises allow students to progress through the combination of the required skills.

The role of the Fire Service – A discussion of the need for cooperation and interaction between industrial and local authority fire brigade, with an explanation of the relevant legislation.

Presentation  through a serious of lectures, demonstrations and realistic practical exercises with interactive debriefs.

Health and Safety :

All delegates attending this course should be medically fit to undertake breathing apparatus training. delegates undergoing training for work in confined spaces should not suffer from claustrophobia, asthma, bronchitis, emphysema and epilepsy or have impairment of vision to the degree that they will not be able to see sufficiently well without the use of glasses.

Beards: Beards or other facial hair may prevent an effective seal being formed between face and face mask when wearing breathing apparatus. For reasons of health and safety, delegates with beard cannot be admitted to courses which involve the wearing of breathing apparatus.
