The Fire and Hazardous Management conference held in November focused on insuring a holistic approach to fire and explosion hazard management in industry. This included: hazard assessment, response philosophy and planning, training, infrastructure, equipment, technical development, and application of lessons learned.  It was inaugurated by the Minister for Home Affairs and National Security, Hon. Carmelo Abela and attended by a broad range of international senior level and line leadership representing the full spectrum of the response community.  The conference was the first of its kind and addressed a critical and fundamental component of Emergency Services Management. The speakers were amongst the highest caliber of professionals, including the director of the US based Chemical Safety Board among others.

JOIFF is an international organization for Emergency Services Management, dealing with Fire Hazard Management. While the emphasis in fire hazard management is on prevention, protection and preparation of risk based scenarios, JOIFF members are also the first call officers/incident controllers at emergencies. Members, therefore, must be fully versed in all aspects of current fire, security, hazardous material and medical emergency response, and must be able to command operations involving fire and other emergency scenarios of all types varying from very minor incidents through to major catastrophic events.  ISTC is Malta’s pre-eminent training college focusing on emergency response, disaster management, health, safety and the environment. The unique training facilities offered by the company have been specifically designed to satisfy the learning outcomes required for the aviation, oil and gas, and marine industries, amongst others. These facilities are contained within a large incident ground where risk critical training is undertaken on a daily basis.

Minister Carmelo Abela inaugurated the conference and described it as the first of its kind, addressing issues that are critical to society’s ability to receive the benefits of high hazard industry while effectively managing the hazards that it introduces. He also described The International Safety Training College (ISTC) as a reflection of the type of commitment to excellence that the country strives for and seeks to promote.
